All Things Employee

Be Thankful For What You Have

These days everyone is uncertain about what the future holds. The stock markets continue to gyrate, consumer confidence continues to be down and employers continue to layoff employees at all levels.

Here is a great example of how everyone is feeling.

“I am making it through day by day. Over the past three weeks my employer has closed a Division, which has impacted everyone I know in the company. Over 5,700 people have lost their jobs in the last 21 days. All in all, about 8,000 people in the last 2 years have been reduced.”

Everything is in flux. “Every time I get my head back in the game, another reduction happens and it just rips everyone to the core. The person I used to work with last year lost his job and his wife lost hers the next week. Stories like these are everywhere. The middle class is being destroyed.”

These days we are afraid to ask someone how their job is going. We are even afraid to ask person questions - like how someone is doing. In fact, have you noticed how many people avoid the subject of “jobs” altogether now – for fear of just getting into an awkward conversation?

Unfortunately everyone is uncertain, everyone is fearful. That is just the reality. Here are some tips to help you deal with the current reality.

  • Be sure you are the one that looks out for your colleagues and your friends.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask someone how they are doing.
  • Don’t be afraid to offer a helping hand or a listening ear.
  • Don’t live in fear – embrace every day, be positive and be thankful for what you have.
