With unemployment, the economy and how to cut back on all of our minds – Groupon recently caught our attention.

What is Groupon? Think of coupons, but with collective buying power. Groupon is a website that offers a local “deal of the day” on food, merchandise or services and it can be anywhere from 50 to 90 percent off the regular price. The catch is you only get the deal if enough people buy.

Groupon is getting even more press these days. Why? It is offering some lucky person a chance to live off the Groupon….

According the site – Groupon is offering “one person to attempt to survive for one year with nothing but a laptop, cellphone, and an unlimited supply of Groupons. If successful, that person will receive $100,000!”

The application deadline is February 24th. The application must include the following:

  • A 90 second video introducing yourself (provide YouTube link)
  • A 400 – 500 word essay on why you think we should choose you to live off Groupons for a year.
  • Visit a featured Groupon business and write a short essay about your experience; videotape yourself speaking with an employee or customer you don't know.

“Once you’ve done that stuff, fill out the form below. We reserve the right to make your application public in case we want our community to weigh in.
Once we get all the applications, we'll review them and choose our favorites.  We'll fly those people to Chicago for an in-person interview, pit you against other applicants in an international martial-arts tournament featuring all known fighting styles, and then select a survivor/winner.”

It certainly sounds intriguing....

We know that Groupon will receive the media attention that it desires from this promotion, but will it be worth it for someone to give it all up for the Groupon?
